Hopping Mad!

– – Let sleeping kangaroos lie!–Such might be the advice of a 49-year-old Australian walking his dog who startled a sleeping ‘roo Sunday morning in Arthur’s Creek northeast of Melbourne.

The man’s dog chased the ‘roo into a pond, and that’s when clobberin’ time began!  The kangaroo turned at that point and pinned the dog underwater!  When the man tried to pull his pet free, the ‘roo took on all comers, using his powerful hind legs to tear a deep gash into the guy’s abdomen and face.

The guy had to throw an elbow to the five-foot kangaroo’s throat to get him to end the attack.  His dog, Rocky, was “half-drowned.”

–That was one mighty marsupial!

Let’s face it; kangaroos are the original kick-boxers. That’s why Australian kangaroo hunters–back when hunting them was still fashionable–took to crossing greyhounds and Irish wolfhounds. They wanted a hunting dog big, strong, and fast enough to take on the not-so-wee-beasties!*

They’re not the only ones who use that particular self-defense tactic, however. North American raccoons have been known to resort to it, too, when they can’t get to a tree.

*Sorry! I’ve been watching too many episodes of The Craig Ferguson Show.

Remember those old cartoons where Sylvester the cat or someone was led to believe that a boxing kangaroo was a giant mouse, and got himself beaten silly?

Ah, yes! “Little” Hoppy. It’s a blessing in disguise he never made it to Australia. The Tasmanian Devil might have gotten him!

        “Blawah! Blawah! Slurp! Blawah!”

The Tasmanian Devil vs. “Little” Hoppy would have been a great episode, maybe with Bugs Bunny doing color commentary!

I can just picture it. Sylvester pursuing Little Hoppy, not knowing he has a rival. And, when he meets that rival, he looks past the 4th Wall, and plaintively pleads for his mother!
